Field & Gown is rental decor company who offers a unique collection of rental decor to make your event perfect. With rentals available for pick-up or delivery in the DC Metro Area. Field & Gown’s goal is to serve their clients by creating a collection that gives each client access to a complete inventory of decorations to make their event perfect and personal.
What is the inspiration for your business? How did you get started?
Field & Gown was born out of a desire to reduce waste in the wedding industry. Social media has upped the ante, subtly pressuring brides to design the perfect, most beautiful, most original wedding. Field & Gown’s inventory gives brides access to an array of unique, beautiful decor items and allows them to have a perfect event without needing to purchase anything new. Our rentals range from the tiny details (votives holders, coasters) to the utilitarian (umbrellas and easels) to total excess (personalized bars, tablescapes and installations.)
What is your best advice for a bride-to-be?
Most of the images you see in bridal blogs are created to make you want more, but a beautiful wedding is really about creativity. A few fun items to placed in eye-catching, high-trafficked areas will wow your guests and that will be enough! Don’t stress over all the details – a year from now, most of your guests will only remember a few snapshots; nothing that can’t be solved with good food, plenty of alcohol and a bit of unique beauty, whatever your style.
Here’s the list of top five goals for 2019 that Field & Gown shared with me for their business. 1. Expand our brand’s reach and the number of weddings we do in 2019 compared with 2018. 2. Design and add new unique items to our inventory that are truly special and made out of repurposed and/or scrap materials. 3. Leverage our warehouse space as a gathering/event space for creative entrepreneurs in the DMV. 4. As a company, send zero waste to the landfill in 2019. 5. Be an advocate for the zero waste wedding movement. Follow along #zerowasteweddings on social media.
What keeps you motivated to face the challenges small business owners face?
When I feel really down or frustrated, I try to focus on the bigger picture. I think of all the brides who have spent money at Michaels and other big box stores to buy small decor items that could easily have been rented. I picture those items stuffed in closets or on their way to the landfill and those images immediately motivate me to continue forward.
What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage fear?
My greatest fear is that our company fails. I believe that the Millennials and Generation Z want to do well in the world and eco-conscious consumerism is part of their vision and goal, but some days I worry that Field & Gown’s vision is ahead of it’s time and that the regular bride has yet to embody our vision. There is so much ego wrapped up in owning a business and I definitely fear that our company will fail and that it’s failure will mean that I myself have failed. When I write it, it sounds crazy, but that’s the biggest fear buried deep inside me.
Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most? And why?
There are so many amazing companies trying to change the world today, it’s hard to pick just one. Probably the business I most admire is Sustain Natural. I am so inspired by their CEO Meika Hollender who always speaks her truth, uses her brand to raise consciousness and contribute to the issues she is passionate about, and produces products that are useful for society.
