Tamika is the face behind Cakes by Kakes. While she was in grad school Tamika was looking to make some extra money. The thought of becoming a baker popped into her head and she ran with it! While Tamika was growing up her mom would bake with her and she enjoyed those memories. Her professional baking started at the craft store, Michael’s where she took a couple of cake decorating classes. That was the start for her, then she went on to read blogs, watch Youtube videos and soak up whatever information she could to further her education within baking.
Side Note: While I watched Tamika decorate this cake my mouth was watering the whole time! It looked stunning and delicious!
Tamika’s favorite part of a wedding day is seeing all the behind the scenes. As a baker she usually delivers the cake to the venue on the day of the wedding, so she gets to see the behind the scenes firsthand as the reception space is being set up. Since it’s usually a busy day/time Tamika aims to make the delivery quick and easy, so her clients don’t have to worry about the cake!
Right now, Cakes by Kakes is a part time endeavor but maybe someday will become full time.
What keeps you motivated to face the challenges small business owners face?
There is a peace that comes over me when I bake. My mind travels away into this silent place and I’m in a zone. It’s really refreshing and keeps me motivated to keep baking great treats.
What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage fear?
Disappointment is my greatest fear. I manage it by categorizing things as responsibilities versus expectations. It helps me keep things in perspective.
If you were a movie character, who would you be and why?
Issa from Insecure. It’s a tv show but I relate to her character as a young professional trying to figure out what’s the next steps for my professional life.
